Preparation Tips for Bariatric Surgery Success

Bariatric surgery offers a solution for individuals struggling with obesity and numerous related health conditions. However, there are various surgery prep steps before patients can undergo bariatric surgery. Let’s take a closer look at how to prepare for weight loss surgery.

Bariatric Surgery Preparation Tips

The first step is to determine if you qualify for bariatric surgery. Generally, bariatric clinics work with candidates who cannot lose weight on their own, have a BMI over 35, and weigh under 450 pounds. They will also explain the pros and cons of various surgeries. Once you decide to move forward with the surgery, you can start preparing by:

Diet Changes

Several weeks before surgery, your doctor will require you to start a pre-operative diet. This low-calorie, low-carb diet will decrease the size of your liver, which becomes enlarged over time due to excess fat. This not only prepares your body for surgery, but it improves the chances of success.

You will start by eliminating all snacks and eating three low-calorie, low-carb meals daily. However, your surgeon will work with you to determine how and when to incorporate your exact diet changes.

Exercise

In addition to a new diet, your surgeon will have you start a daily exercise regime. Since exercise is the key to losing weight, starting early will help you establish a healthy routine that you can maintain after surgery.

Start with working out at least five minutes a day, seven days a week. Then, slowly increase the duration of your workouts as it becomes easier.

Eliminate Alcohol and Tobacco

Smoking and drinking can increase the risk of complications during surgery and interfere with recovery. Thus, eliminating smoking and drinking is critical for a successful surgery.

Get Started on Your Health Journey

Whether you’re interested in a bariatric sleeve or gastric bypass, the first step is to contact a bariatric clinic to discuss your options. If your healthcare team determines you’re a good candidate for weight loss surgery, they will walk you through the diet and lifestyle changes required for long-term success.
