Managing Emotional Changes After Bariatric Surgery

Managing Emotional Changes After Bariatric Surgery

The goal of bariatric surgery is always to bring positive, lasting changes into your life; however, unexpected emotional stressors can occur after surgery. Knowing what to look out for and how to deal with emotional triggers is key to post-surgery success. Here are some of the most common emotional and psychological changes that may occur and how to deal with them.

Psychological Changes

Your emotional well-being can shift following surgery. Many people report suffering from a temporary mood disorder such as depression. Your body went through a lot during the surgery and it is normal for your mind to feel a little different following such a big lifestyle change.

Judgements

Bariatric surgery is for you and your health; however, dealing with judgment from others can be challenging. Some people do not understand the weight-loss journey and may be misinformed about the surgery. It may help to share limited information with those around you causing emotional stress so you can focus on your healthier lifestyle.

Lifestyle Changes

It can be overwhelming to think about all of the lifestyle changes you are making at once. After going through surgery you need to focus on a healthy diet and remain active to keep the weight off. However, these are all positive benefits and will eventually become second-nature in your daily routine.

How to Find Healthy Coping Mechanisms

You don’t have to go through these emotional changes alone. There are many others in your shoes and options to find support after weight loss surgery, including:

  • Get Professional Guidance– Seek support from licensed therapists to address any mental health shifts. They can create an individualized plan to get you back to feeling like yourself again.
  • Support Networks– There are support networks both virtually and in-person specifically for bariatric patients. Talking to others who understand your journey can help ease the emotional burden.
  • Set Realistic Expectations– Don’t be too hard on yourself or expect your entire lifestyle to change overnight. Set small goals that you can accomplish to eventually lead to large results.

Remain grateful for your body and try to embrace your new lifestyle with the knowledge that your health is the most important aspect.
